Once you have determined the actual wattage of the appliances and electrical devices you wish to run in the event of a power outage, you must then decide on a type of generator system. Some criteria to keep in mind include:

• Fuel Type.  Most residential generators run on gasoline, natural gas or propane.

• Portable vs. Stationary.   A portable generator makes it easy to transport your back-up power source from one location to another. A portable unit does not come with an outdoor enclosure and must be started manually. Conversely, a stationary generator has the option for a weatherproof enclosure, automatic transfer switch, and other accessories that aren't available to the smaller, portable units.
